One thing that’s overwhelmingly noticeable about the Oregon Coast, in addition to stunning coastal cliffs with crashing waves, is that there are a lot of… dogs. Everywhere — in restaurants, in coffee shops, in stores.
Nothing against dogs, but I’m more of an “animals outdoors, plants indoors” kinda gal.
I’m typically in the minority in this belief, but I realized just how much of a minority I am one recent Oregon morning when I was scanning a breakfast menu and saw a “K9” section.
Even more vexing was the fact that I was apparently ordering the same things the pups do: eggs and bacon. 😑
Personal preferences aside, the growth of the pets-as-family cultural phenomenon is closely connected to the — you guessed it — animal protein business.
Not surprisingly, the same trends playing out in human food are playing out in pet food, so let’s take a peek at the history of pet food, the current trends, and why this macro phenomenon can’t be ignored, or taken for granted, within the animal protein complex.
