Nice article Janette! I would like to note than in South Africa we do have vertically integrated cattle production and the asset intensive nature of the business isn't a deterrent for that. It definitely isn't done at massive scale yet, but increasingly so over the past decade. But indeed, most VC's I've talked to are not interested in primary production.

Given $15m I would build a D2C beef/lamb business and build a tech platform where consumers can "own" (think crowdfunding/investment) their own meat supply and get it delivered to their door and maybe even earn some dividends. I thought about various variations on this, but to really maximize RoI, I believe you have to own the land or at least have very long-term lease agreements in place. Luckily in SA, the $15m would be able to get me quite far, even with an asset intensive business model.

Nice article, with $15M we will invest in pork and cattle from complete value chain except for cattle PRIMARY production as we will be off taking the cattle from our existing farmers. Pig is an high growth
